After the experience of\u00a0Futurism, filtered through\u00a0C\u00e9zanne\u00a0and\u00a0Cubism,\u00a0he adheres\u00a0to the general\u00a0Return to Order of the early twenties,\u00a0finding\u00a0in\u00a0it the cultural milieu and\u00a0style that most suit him,\u00a0so much so that he would remain true to it for the rest of his long career.\u00a0Although already characterised by\u00a0a thick, doughy brushstroke,\u00a0with\u00a0continuity\u00a0and\u00a0softness of line and\u00a0a solid plastic\u00a0understanding,\u00a0it is a substantial transformation with respect to the theoretical\u00a0acquisitions of Futurism.\u00a0At this point\u00a0he begins an incessant and programmatic return to classical and neoclassical sources. Moreover,\u00a0for community of\u00a0intent, in\u00a01922\u00a0he is among the founder members of the\u00a0Novecento\u00a0group, alongside\u00a0Lino Pesaro\u00a0and\u00a0Margherita Sarfatti.\u00a0He hopes for\u00a0a new Renaissance,\u00a0rejecting any technique\u00a0that does not adhere to the cannons of traditional painting\u00a0and focussing attention on the plastic values of composition.\u00a0In\u00a01933\u00a0he signs the\u00a0Manifesto del Muralismo\u00a0with\u00a0Campigli\u00a0and\u00a0Sironi\u00a0and from that moment onward he dedicates the greater part of his energies to making\u00a0large scale\u00a0fresco cycles.\u00a0At the end of his life he declared:\u00a0\u201cI have calculated that\u00a0overall I have painted\u00a0frescoes to cover an area\u00a0at least\u00a06 km long\u00a0and\u00a01 metre high.\u201d\u00a0Beside\u00a0this enormous effort, easel painting is often\u00a0thought of as a sort of fragment of the same,\u00a0which might be the case for this self-portrait,\u00a0that in\u00a0its\u00a0suspended fixity, inscrutable expression and in the distance of the research from mere psychological data, declares one of the essential references of his painting: Piero della Francesca.<\/p>\n
