Like his sister Luce,\u00a0<\/span>Elica<\/span>\u00a0carried in her name the futurist blessing of their father Giacomo, who in 1914, the year of her birth, introduced the theme of the\u00a0<\/span>Caproni<\/span>\u00a0aeroplane into painting; to later sign the\u00a0<\/span>Futurist Manifesto of\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Aeropainting<\/span><\/i>\u00a0in 1929. She shared with her sister the choice of a secluded life and artistic collaboration with their father \u2013 of whom later she would write the biography (<\/span>Con\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Balla<\/span><\/i>, 3 vols., Milan 1984-86) \u2013 converting his ideas into objects of applied art and decorations for the\u00a0<\/span>Balla\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0house in via\u00a0<\/span>Oslavia<\/span>, a futurist setting in continual transformation. However, she showed greater determination than Luce to put herself forward as an autonomous artist. Futurist painter at a very young age she participated, under the pseudonym\u00a0<\/span>Ballelica<\/span>, in the exhibition\u00a0<\/span>Trentatr\u00e9<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>artisti<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>futuristi<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(33 Futurist Artists) at Galleria Pesaro in Milan in 1929, at the XVII Venice Biennale in 1930 and at the\u00a0<\/span>Prima\u00a0<\/span><\/i>mostra<\/span><\/i>\u00a0di\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Aeropittura<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(First Exhibition of\u00a0<\/span>Aeropainting<\/span>) of 1931. In 1935 she exhibited with her father and sister at the Galleria\u00a0<\/span>d\u2019Arte<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>L\u2019Antonina<\/span>, while in 1942 she held a personal show at the Lyceum Romano (<\/span>cfr<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Casa\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Balla<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Un pittore e le sue figlie tra futurismo e natura<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>catalogue<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/span>exhibition<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at<\/span>\u00a0Comacchio, ed. by Maurizio Fagiolo Dell\u2019Arco,\u00a0<\/span>Venice<\/span>\u00a01997).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As can be seen by many of the titles of her paintings presented on that occasion (<\/span>Prelude of a Storm<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>Tranquil Sleep<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>Pensive\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Lionella<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>Smile of Spring<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Melancholy<\/span><\/i>),\u00a0<\/span>Elica<\/span>\u00a0focuses on natural reality and the inspirational motives of her figurative painting were sentimentally inspired. This lyrical concept is also evoked in the intimist portrait of a young man entitled\u00a0<\/span>Inspiration<\/span><\/i>, where a young poet is intent on noting down ideas in a notebook at dusk, in a suggestive Roman park. The pinkish and pastel colours are applied with ease in an expressive style by means of the typical\u00a0<\/span>divisionist<\/span>\u00a0brushstrokes, in part recalling the late painting of her father Giacomo.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
