The critic Ugo <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ojetti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in his review of the Fine Art Exhibition of Milan in 1906, where the artist presented the nude\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Riflessi<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d\u2019oro<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(today in the Galleria Nazionale\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d\u2019Arte<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Moderna<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0collections), stated that Noci could by that time consider himself \u00abthe greatest, if not the only Roman portraitist.\u00bb\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(U.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ojetti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Attraverso l\u2019Esposizione: pittori e pitture<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in \u201cCorriere della Sera\u201d, 23 maggio 1906, p. 3).\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Particularly appreciated by the international aristocracy and the jet set of the time \u2013 his portrait of the diva of silent movies <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lyda<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Borelli was famous (1914, private collection) \u2013 for his modern and elegant painting, Arturo Noci had a thriving career as a portraitist that culminated in him moving to New York in 1923, where for thirty years he could count on the commissions of wealthy collectors from high society.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although the artist carried out important portraits on commission from the very start of his career (for example the pastel\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Portrait\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Portrait in Yellow<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, received to acclaim at the Venice Biennale in 1905), unanimous written opinion associates the success of Noci the portraitist to the experience of the Roman \u201cSecession.\u201d When the disagreements in the \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Societ\u00e0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">degli<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amatori<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0e\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cultori<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0di\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Belle Arti\u201d led to a certain artists re-grouping to show autonomously in large international exhibitions, thus giving life to the \u201cSecession,\u201d Arturo Noci was in the front line and on the board of directors from the start. Without a doubt the initiative was fuelled by a desire to update the artistic milieu of the capital, by then considered excessively provincial. However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Noci\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0search for modernity was somewhat moderate and, as was the case for many of his Secessionist colleagues, it found fulfilment in the haven of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">divisionist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technique, at that time back in favour among Roman painters. The divided touch was therefore used for the most part in the representation of interior scenes of an intimist flavour and in elegant portraits. Belonging to this phase is the expressive\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Girl in Profile:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not a commissioned portrait, but an inspired figure study of one of his favourite models, painted at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Noci\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0studio in via\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Margutta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The work is part of a rich series of portraits of women carried out in pastel, all characterised by a rapid and impressive rendering in which completed areas alternate with swiftly sketched areas, and by a filamentary style that seems to echo the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">divisionist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0paintings of the same period. In 1916, the year in which Noci produced this pastel, the fourth Roman \u201cSecession\u201d exhibition was held; it would also be the last, due to the outbreak of war. However, the hiatus of the Great War did not damage the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Noci\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0artistic activity: on the contrary, he took to experimenting with more audacious visual formulae, stimulated by a re-found creativity.
